The theory of neuroplasticity challegnes the rigid framework that simply divides the brain into binary “male” and “female.” It explains that brain sex is not an innate, unchanging essence, but rather a dynamic process shaped gradually through lived experience.
Childhood trauma is a hidden undercurrent in queer narratives. These traces are not merely remnants of the past, but threads that seep into the fabric of growing up and influences the formation of self-identity. In other words, hir identity is always wounded.
When adults revisit the past through a queer lens, they often reinterpreted the fragments of memory. This brings up a reciprocal triangle between trauma, memory, and gender identity.
Holok is a genderqueer and lives in this planet as an alien. One day, ze returned to hir birthplace -- a modest village in Yuen Long -- accompanied by fragments of hir childhood: video clips, toys that hold secret letters, and unfinished voices.
Hiding, confronting, waiting— “It all began with one cry, ” ze said.
